Chocolate-covered strawberries are flying off the shelves of local confectioneries. Fresh strawberries have come into season and Mother's Day is upon us, so this treat ends up as a gift for many mothers.
Jennifer Tanner, executive chef at Julie's Deli, says their secret is not only hand-picked strawberries, chosen for the role out of the shipments the deli gets from Dallas, but also Julie's Deli's chocolate recipe.
"It is our own in-house recipe. When those two elements, our own chocolate and these fresh strawberries, these elements are what make our chocolate-covered strawberries stand out," she said.
They are popular this year for Mother's Day, though Tanner says a long-time favorite remains Julie's Deli's No. 1 seller on this Mother's Day.
"They are still buying our white chocolate strawberry cake," she said.
Tanner says it is great with customers coming into the store once again. She knows that the last several weeks have been tough with mothers having to pull double duty for their families, taking care of children at home and other chores, while many of them have to work.
"We helped feed families during the shutdown," Tanner said. "Lots of moms were coming to us for pickup meals, casseroles, boar's head meats and more. Many folks seemed tapped out the longer the shutdown wore on. We did what we could to help."

At Edible Arrangements at 4501 N. State Line Ave., they were very busy, rushing to put Mother's Day orders together. According to manager Robert Cullins, Edible Arrangements also has some special twists to this treat.
"We have a special chocolate formula," he said. "Also, we get our fresh strawberries from Santa Marie, Louisiana, fresh every day."
They have a unique variant on this confection, pineapple-stuffed strawberries covered in chocolate.
"We have lots of orders coming in for these and other gifts on Mother's Day," he said. "Just a bit busy up in here."
