Arts & Ideas Festival gets personal with pair of melodic/tasty offerings - CTPost

It’s hard to fathom the live performanes of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas silenced as they have been by COVID-19, but the festival still has some fun tricks up its sleeve — two in particular.

One is New Haven Arts on Call, which allows you to arrange a live, socially distanced arts performance at an outdoor location for yourself or someone you love. You’ll pay a fee, of course, but that goes completely to the New Haven area artist.

Arts officials say that includes a juggler to perform on your grandchildren’s front lawn or a guitar player to strum beneath your girlfriend’s window. New Haven Arts on Call is modeled after Sidewalk Serenades, a program created in March 2020 by Creative Alliance in Baltimore, and is presented with support from the Elizabethan Club of Yale University.

The roster of artists is on the festival website (artidea.org) and includes sterling musicians Steve Rodgers, Thabisa and Lara Herscovitch and Tiffany Jackson. Performances will happen between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. in a 10-mile radius of New Haven and bookings can be made directly with the artist for the 10- to 15-minute set.

The other is KeyBank Food, a series of interactive virtual food experiences that brings some of New Haven tasty food offerings, and the chefs who create them, into your home via computer. Participants pick up the evening’s meal from the participating restaurant on the day of the event. That evening, you will be joined at a virtual communal table by other folks and the chefs themselves, who will guide you through the menu they have prepared. All proceeds go directly to the participating New Haven establishments.

“In light of the devastating effect of the pandemic on New Haven’s arts and small business ecologies, the Festival is committed to supporting our friends and neighbors in every way we can,” said Co-Directors Liz Fisher and Tom Griggs in a release.

A May 15 event with Ordinary and Roia owners/chefs sold out, and there’s a Garden Cocktail Party May 22 at 7 p.m. with John Ginnetti of 116 Crown and a June 6 Cooking With Sanctuary Kitchen class on June 6 at 7 p.m. See artidea.org/food-experiences
