TORRINGTON — A row of brown paper bags filled with stuffing mix, gravy and cranberry sauce to accompany a frozen turkey disappeared very quickly this week at Friendly Hands Food Bank.
Families lined up in their cars as far as the cemetery on South Main Street Tuesday, Executive Director Karen Thomas said.
She and her staff also delivered turkeys to all of the city’s senior housing complexes Nov. 20.
“We provided some Thanksgiving food for our homebound seniors, and we’ve continued to do that during the pandemic,” Thomas said.
“We had five vehicles with volunteers, who went to Koury Terrace, Willoa Gardens, Thompson Heights, Torrington Towers and Laurel Acres,” she said.
At the food bank, Chad Widing and Ed Corey were outside, loading vegetables to accompany the turkeys and other fixings.
“It’s cold out here, but once you get moving you don’t really notice it,” Corey said.
“I don’t feel it at all,” Widing said proudly, lifting a bag of onions. “It’s a nice day.”
Thomas estimated that the food bank provided 800 Thanksgiving meals this year, compared to 500 in 2020. Outside of the holiday, the food bank serves hundreds of families every month.
“I just get the feeling that even though people are saying things are getting better, there are a lot of people who are really struggling,” she said.
“With prices going up on everything, and the cold weather coming on, they just don’t have enough money,” Thonmas said.
“Especially if they have a family. We are definitely filling a need,” she said.
The food bank can be reached at fhfb.org or by calling 860-482-3338.
