BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard Fire Rescue Chief Mark Schollmeyer is on the road this Thanksgiving.
But it's not what you might think. This is a trip to see his work family.
"It's hard on people being away from their family," says Chief Mark Schollmeyer of Brevard Fire Rescue. "It's just our way of giving back to those who are working today."
"People in public safety work on holidays, we are a 24/7 operation," he explained.
Instead of he and wife Jessica having their own holiday meal and dessert, they are dropping by all 33 county fire stations with pumpkin cheesecakes they made themselves.
For the past eight years, they've driven more than 250 miles for 12 hours personally delivering the tasty desserts to the men and woman pulling the Thanksgiving shift.
It's something the chief knows very well. He's worked his share of holidays as a firefighter on duty, ready to protect the public.
The Thanksgiving effort isn't going unnoticed by Lt. Wayne Strawser, who is on shift at Station 81.
"He's been a chief for many years now, but he came from the same place that we all did," Lt. Strawer tells us. "He knows what we go through on a daily basis, he understands."
The cheesecakes are a hit, a small gesture that goes a long way.
With each drop off there's more gratitude from his firefighters. For the moment, dessert is a good diversion from duty.
And for Chief Schollmeyer this is the last time he will do this on duty.
"I retire March 1 of 2022, so our eight year tradition has ended as of today," he says.
A bittersweet end of that tradition that won't be forgotten.
The chief and his wife also dropped cheesecakes by the department's dispatch center and Health First's "First Flight" medical helicopter hangar in Melbourne.
