After the Thanksgiving feast next week, the shopping frenzy begins, along with the pressure of finding the perfect gift for everyone on your list. Come to think about it, hasn’t it already begun? I’ve noticed the lines at the stores are already long with the carts overflowing with gifts and holiday decorations. From what I hear and read, online shopping is growing by leaps and bounds too.
Each year, I look forward to helping readers find the perfect kitchen gadget, food product and cookbooks for foodie friends and relatives, and perhaps even yourself. I know these suggestions will fit the bill. Throughout the year, I attend food-related trade shows and events, returning with lots of ideas of what to include here. I have become a fan of many of these companies, as well. The recipients of these gifts quite often say, “you send the neatest (and tastiest) gifts.’ With so many new items, it is difficult to choose what to include here. Remember, Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is early, with the first candle being lit on November 28, so time is short for those on your Hanukkah list.
Best wishes to you this holiday season, now let the shopping begin!
Wolferman’s Bakery, known for their thick English muffins in a variety of flavors goes back to 1888. They must be doing something right! And these are not your typical supermarket English muffins. The English Muffin Variety pack is always well-received by the recipients I send it to.
Included: Multi-grain honey super-thick English muffins, Cherry blossom super-thick English muffins, 1910 original recipe traditional English muffins, Cinnamon raisin traditional English muffins, Cranberry citrus mini English muffins, San Francisco-style sourdough mini English muffins. The beautifully packaged Deluxe Christmas Cheer Tower includes English muffins, cinnamon roll, cranberry orange loaf cake, preserves, ground coffee, yogurt-covered peppermint tree-shapes pretzels and shortbread cookies. https://bit.ly/3cg3Ron
I am hooked on Cheryl’s Cookies. Not only do I send them as gifts, but I send the Mystery Box to myself a few times a year. Cheryl’s prides itself on its hand-crafted cut-out cookies with buttercream frosting. The Happy Hanukkah Gift Tower is the perfect selection to send to those on your Hanukkah list. Thirty-six delectable delights include individually wrapped snack size cookies, triple chocolate frosted cookies, pecan butterballs and foil wrapped chocolate coins (Hanukkah gelt) and buttercream frosted snowball cut-out cookies. https://bit.ly/3kHeZPJ
The 54- piece entertainment gift basket is the perfect host/hostess gift. Assorted cake slices and pecan butternut balls join the variety of cookies. https://bit.ly/328Tl0g
From Christmas chocolate-covered, candy apples to truffles and chocolates, many prepared by many well-known chocolatiers, you are bound to find the right chocolate gift for the chocoholics on your list from Simply Chocolate. Their Holiday Premiere collection includes both milk and dark varieties, including a favorite of mine, dark chocolate strawberry rhubarb. https://bit.ly/3qJGxrw
For a very reasonable flat yearly fee, check out the Celebrations Passport, providing free standard shipping for most of the products from the above three companies. Mine has more than paid for itself already, and gift-giving season has just started.
If you’ve heard of “Everything” bagels that have sesame, poppy seeds, onion, garlic and chili flakes topping the dough, well, now The Spice Lab has added an Everything + More spice blend. The gift pack includes the original, Everything + Jalapeno, where mildly spicy jalapeno pepper flakes replace the chili pepper; Everything + Tomato described as sweet, dried tomato flakes add color and a fresh flavor profile; and Everything + Scallion, the original mixed with dried scallion flakes. Each bottle includes tips for using each blend. How about topping mac and cheese with Everything + Tomato or topping popcorn with a different blend? https://bit.ly/2YRyhKm
Another collection from The Spice Lab that adds flavor and flair to cooking, is the Taste of America blends. Spice dishes with one of the four regional seasonings: Key West, Fiery Southern Charm, Chicago Chop and Everything+ More. https://bit.ly/30skvhU
The Tequila afficionados on your list will appreciate The Spice Lab’s Himalayan Salt Tequila Shooters gift set. The set includes four shot glasses made from Himalayan salt, a serving tray and small dish to hold slices of lime. The Spice Lab suggests that the set could also be used for serving gazpacho, shrimp cocktail or oyster shooters. The company is proud that it was selected as one of Oprah’s Favorite Things. Don’t worry about the tequila getting too salty. The designer thought of it all, as there’s an insert to put into the cup. https://bit.ly/31W5g1d
Bring Cuban flavor to the kitchen with Soul de Cuba’s family of products. With the New Haven, CT restaurant’s line of mojo sauces and salsas and dressings, you’ll be cooking Cuban fare at home. The restaurant says, “from chicken with mojo and honey to traditional Lechon Asado or Cuban-style fish, we selected our top restaurant favorites to help you have a full-flavored Cuban experience at home. The “Let it Marinade “collection has five mojos and sauces to help “take meat flavors to a new “Cuban-inspired level.” New to their repertoire, is the Soul Mojito Mix. Michael, the General Manager, referred me to the website where it says, “it is all-natural, just add soda and rum and bring home the taste of our famous Soul Mojito.” https://bit.ly/31WbwWL
For the children on your list, Young Chefs’ Club by America’s Test Kitchen is a fun way for kids to learn about science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. And what child doesn’t enjoy being in the kitchen? According to the website, the monthly themed box includes kid-tested and kid-approved recipes, engaging hands-on activities and experiments, creative projects and games, shopping list, and useful, unique, and fun physical items.
Box themes change every month and will be a surprise for kids (grown-ups can find the shopping lists on the website). Themes range from specific ingredients (such as cheese or bread) to cooking techniques (such as cake decorating), scientific subjects (such as food texture or molecular gastronomy), and cuisines or types of food (such as tacos). Purchase a single box, a month, 6-month or year subscription. Choose from the pre-school chefs‘club (ages 3-5) or young chefs’ club (ages 6-12) ATKkids.com
“The New Cooking School Cookbook,” by the editors of America’s Test Kitchen (2021, $45) might be the only cookbook a recipient would need. The cover flap says, “Go to cooking school in your own kitchen with nearly 100 themed courses to learn, more than 200 skills and cook 400 recipes.” With almost 700 pages, anyone can learn both the “hows” and “whys” of cooking. For example, why does pizza come out better when it is cooked on a stone? Why is it best to salt food at different times during the cooking of the dish? Why does the temperature of butter react differently in the cooking process? I found the recipe overviews and the science lesson sidebars for each dish, interesting. For example, the recipe for sausage lasagna says,” Untraditionally, this lasagna uses cottage cheese rather than ricotta. Ricotta can become dry and pasty when baked, while cottage cheese contains more moisture and stays pillowy-soft and creamy.” The graphics and step-by-step photos add to the understanding of the recipes and cooking techniques.
What a great idea….and it is free! Two dozen recipes you can print and mail this holiday season. Bed and breakfasts across the U.S, including a few from Pennsylvania, have shared their best holiday recipes in postcard form. Make a recipe every day as a Christmas countdown, sharing deliciousness across the miles. According to the information I received, nineteen inns, beds and breakfast and boutique hotels across the country have joined together to create mailable recipes in the form of postcards as a yummy way to countdown the days till Christmas.
“The idea is to count your blessings, not calories,” says Erin Gilchrist, innkeeper with A’Tuscan Estate Bed & Breakfast in McMinnville, Oregon. “By making these postcards free to download, we’ve whipped up a way to bring people together, regardless of location and circumstance. It’s now possible to cook together in different kitchens, in different states, even in different countries thanks to video calls. Our hope is the recipe postcards will provide many opportunities for friends and families to virtually connect,” says Dena Finneran, innkeeper of the Caldwell House Bed and Breakfast in Salisbury Mills, New York. “Of course, we also hope in the future people will connect offline and consider a reunion at one of our properties.” Recipes include holiday drinks, desserts, cookies, breakfast foods, and more.
