The Cheyenne Greek Festival is canceled in 2021, but residents can still enjoy baked treats as Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church Holiday Pastry Sale is moving forward.

Greek Festival Co-Chairman Taylor Olson said the Greek Festival would have been in September for two weeks after Labor Day weekend.

"The Festival takes us a good chunk of the year to prepare for," he said. "When it was about February and March, we still didn't know where this was going. That was when we had to make the call not to have it this year. It's all volunteer-based to make it happen. A lot of our volunteers are elderly, and they are concerned about Covid-19."

Olson said the preorder deadline to order the Holiday Box is extended until Saturday, November 20.

"It's all preorder for the bake sale," he said. "It's a singular box, and it will have a dozen Koulourakia (twisted Greek butter pastry), half a dozen homemade Kourambiethes (powdered sugar cookie), and there is a small tray of Baklava in there."

He acknowledged that a lot of people have different tastes.

"This is the first time we've ever done this," he said. "We didn't offer options because we didn't know how it would go over, so we are just offering that singular box option."

He said the volunteers from the church spent lots of time baking.

"We put it out there at the church to help with whatever they can help with," he said. "We did the Kourambiethes last week, and we have been preparing for the last 1.5 months. Everything is ready to go. I'm just waiting for the physical boxes to get here."

He said, inside the church, they have an executive committee that makes the decisions.

"As I took the Co-Chairman role with my Co-Chairman, George Costopoulos, we talked about wanting to do something in 2021, but we weren't sure what it would look like," Olson said. "We wanted to have a season-long event to remind the community that we're here, we're excited, and we've missed them just as much as they've missed us."

The feedback, he said, is that people haven't been able to get the pastries they would buy at the Greek Festival for two years.

"Our pastry booth is one of the busiest booths at the Festival," he said. "You can buy these packaged pastries they can take home. It freezes well, so a lot of people save them for Christmas gifts or serve them at Christmas parties. That's when we thought that doing something around the holidays would be fun for us and give the community the opportunity to get the pastries they've missed so much."

Olson said the money raised from the Holiday Bake Sale goes to the Festival fund and better the community's experience.

"We are giving a portion of those proceeds to an organization affiliated with the church," he said. "They have a Christian Charities Family. They find these families who are in need for Christmas, and they provide gifts and food, so they can also have Christmas celebrations. We felt that was an appropriate way to give back for the Christmas holiday."

Olson loves the community reaction.

"Just seeing how much people have enjoyed the Festival in the past," he said. "I grew up here, and the Festival has been a big part of my life."
