EAST DAILEY — A sold-out crowd attended the 34th annual Great Give-Away fundraiser hosted by the Tygart Valley Lions Club at Spelunkers Bottom on the East Dailey Road.

The annual event, which is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the organization, saw hundreds of people attend Saturday evening, as every ticket printed for the bash was sold to patrons this year.

“We had a sell-out crowd, which was great because last year we couldn’t have it at all,” said Gary Schoonover, who has been with the Lions Club for 50 years. “This year everybody wanted to get out, so we sold all 225 tickets for the event. Everybody got all the food they wanted and if they went away hungry it was their own fault.”

Each ticket for the event admitted the bearer and one guest, with each treated to a filet mignon steak dinner, which included roasted corn, desserts and all the sides. Shrimp was served as the main course appetizer.

“This event has become very popular and it keeps growing every year,” Schoonover said. “In fact, we actually raised the price a little on the tickets this year because the demand is so high. We could have actually sold more tickets this year if we wanted to.”

Along with a grand-prize drawing of $5,000, the event featured two $1,000 winners and 15people walked away with $100. The night also featured a 50/50 drawing and a gun raffle. A two-hour social hour kicked off the evening’s festivities.

Once the drawing got down to the final four people holding tickets, those individuals decided to split the grand prize award, resulting in them collecting $1,250 each.

“Every penny made from this event is given away to the community,” Schoonover said. “We had a lot of members work hard to make sure this event was as successful as it was, especially long-time members Scott Criss and John Lounsbury.”
