This is not an issue about politics. No matter your political party or your world views, we should be able to all agree. Homemade treats are delicious. Wisconsin has thousands of grandmothers, each capable of dishing up something tasty to share. Perhaps some fudge or Rice Krispies treats. But in Wisconsin, it is hard to share. Wisconsin is one of just two states that ban the sale of many homemade items. These are things sold at farmer’s markets or to friends and neighbors. Our state senators have once again introduced “The Cookie Bill” which would eliminate the ban on selling homemade tasty treats. But it has been introduced before with passing. This is the third time it has been introduced as legislation. A judge in Wisconsin recently ruled the state’s ban on the sales of homemade breads, muffins and other baked goods is unconstitutional. The state is likely to appeal. Of course we don’t want food that is cooked in a dirty kitchen, but there are already regulations for that. Can’t our lawmakers wake up and smell the home-roasted coffee? In Wisconsin, we support fresh, locally made food, yet have one of the most restrictive laws in the country for selling homemade food. Grandma’s cookies aren’t hurting anyone. And they’re delicious.
