The pandemic caused the 2020 high school football season on Staten Island to be played in the spring of 2021, and what a unique season it was.

Lost in the chaos of the shortened season, which didn’t feature a postseason in either the PSAL and CHSFL, were some interesting facts and tasty morsels uncovered when SILive.com and the Advance updated our HS football records this week.

Below are some of the more interesting facts of the 2021 spring season, which will officially go into our archives as the 2020 campaign.

  • Curtis completed a 6-0 mark, one of only two teams to go unbeaten in the spring. Moore was 4-0 in the CHSFL. The season saw Warrior head coach Pete Gambardella win his 100th game. He’s 100-44-0 in 13 seasons in St. George.
  • Tottenville completed its 50th football season by posting a 4-2 mark with both losses coming to Curtis. The Pirates are 315-187-12 in 50 seasons. The season also marked the fifth for head coach Brian Neville, whose owns a 37-14 mark since taking over for Jim Munson in 2016.
  • Finishing 4-0, Moore Catholic recorded its second unbeaten season in the program’s short 15-year history. It brought current head coach Nick Giannatasio’s record to 29-13-0 in five seasons. Greg Rocco’s 2008 Mavericks posted a 9-0 record while playing an independent schedule.

With 15 seasons under his belt, Port Richmond head coach Lou Vesce is currently the longest tenured HS football coach on Staten Island.

  • Port Richmond head coach Lou Vesce, who is the elder statesman of Island coaches, became the Raiders’ longest tenured head football coach of all time. His 15 seasons at the helm passed his predecessor, Steve Peretzman, who coached 14 seasons at PR. With his 3-3 record this spring, Vesce sports an 82-72-0 record.
  • With its 3-1 record, Monsignor Farrell recorded its 353th career victory in 57 seasons in Oakwood. The Lions are 353-170-11 during that time. Anthony Garofalo is the school’s current head coach.
  • Susan Wagner finished 1-5 in the spring, but only played three games as they won a game via forfeit because of COVID-19 and lost two others for the same reason.
  • McKee/Staten Island Tech opted out of the 2021 spring season and is getting set for the fall season with new head coach Chris App Jr. at the helm. App’s father, Chris Sr., coached 17 successful seasons at New Dorp from 1996 to 2012.
