Starting at 10 a.m., hungry patrons lined up at 18 food trucks parked at the Wise County Fairgrounds Saturday.
Hundreds meandered through the various trucks and trailers for a savory or sweet sampling as warm sunshine welcomed them back to the Eighter from Decatur Food Truck Challenge after a year’s lapse. Last year’s challenge was canceled due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines put in place.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the community and the Chamber,” said Cason Caraway, Decatur Chamber of Commerce president. “We put this event on for the people. Coming out of 2020 for this to be this big is exactly what we wanted.”
The challenge featured 18 food trucks vying for cash prizes. Another 43 vendors were set up at the entrance of the fairgrounds, featuring a variety of products and services.
“We’re thankful to the board, our sponsors and all the volunteers. To put on this large of an event takes a lot of selfless acts and a lot of money. We’re so appreciative,” Caraway said.
It was the first time for the event to be at the fairgrounds after previously being held in downtown Decatur. The extra space allowed for parking and a larger crowd.
The Chamber sold more than 6,000 tickets between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the food truck challenge.
“It’s by far the most we’ve ever sold,” said Misty Hudson, executive director for the Decatur Chamber.
Though a few showers rolled through in the evening, a nice crowd turned out for the closing concerts. A rainbow draped across the sky as Jarrod Morris played his set. William Clark Green closed the night.
