MUSKEGON, MI – A family-run bakery started out of Mari Romero’s home five years ago, and now Yummy Delights has expanded to two locations in Muskegon.

“I would say the whole city of Muskegon has totally embraced us,” she said.

After working for two decades in the medical field, Romero pursued her passion for baking in 2016 by opening a little shop out of her home.

But she quickly outgrew that.

Romero kept baking and got a license to expand her offerings after a friend, one of the owners of La Casa Fierro, let her work out of the restaurant’s kitchen.

By 2019, Romero and her husband, Jorge Romero, purchased the first brick and mortar location of Yummy Delights, 459 E. Laketon Ave. The couple repaired the building — a former ice cream shop with no heating, no air conditioning and no roof — and opened it in the summer.

Local artist Dan Parker painted the bright blue shop with pink frosting dripping off the roof, sprinkles, cupcakes, chocolate covered strawberries and a donut.

“We’ve had nothing but growth since we’ve been here,” said Romero.

The bakery continued to flourish throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, using social media and online ordering to gain new customers. And at the beginning of May this year, Yummy Delights hired its first assistant baker and opened a second location at 1845 Lakeshore Drive.

The Romero’s two grown daughters, Adriana Molina and Sabrina Ramirez, also joined the business to help run the second bakery.

“It’s just a true blessing, especially being able to not only survive through the pandemic but to actually being able to grow enough where we needed a second location,” said Romero.

A normal day for Romeros starts around 5 a.m. when they head to the shop to start baking. The couple don’t usually leave until after 7:30 p.m.

“Our days are long and it’s a lot of work, but we wouldn’t have it any other way,” Romero said.

The most popular items at Yummy Delights are cheesecake delights, which are like cupcakes, and are available in strawberry, banana pudding, Oreo and brownie turtle for $8.

Other customer favorites include cheesecake for $7 a slice, gourmet brownies and unique cupcake flavors like peach cobbler and s’mores.

Inspired by their Texas roots, the Romeros also sell buttery Mexican street corn and fruit sprinkled with Mexican spices.

“You know how they say it takes a tribe to raise your child. Well, same thing with a business. It takes the entire community, everybody helping out,” Romero said.

Yummy Delights can be reached by phone at 616-848-6946. Hours for both locations vary but can be found on the Facebook page for the Laketon location and Yummy Delights on the Lakeshore.

Facebook currently lists the hours for Laketon as 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 2 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Lakeshore site listed as being opened on Monday from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m.

Orders can be placed online here, and curbside pickup is available.
