Do you want to know the trick to captivating the attention of second-graders? We’ll give you a hint: it’s round and sweet, and sometimes, there are sprinkles.
Students in Ms. McCallum’s class at Liberty Elementary STEM Academy in Sapulpa were assigned a persuasive writing essay that activated the imagination and the tastebuds.
Each student had to dream up their own donut, write about it, draw a picture of it, and convince the reader why the donut should be made.
They had no idea that their dreamed-up-donut would become a reality, thanks to the creativity of Michelle Smith at Big Chief’s Donuts and More at 1329 S. Main Street in Sapulpa.
“I’ve always liked to do the decorating, so it was a lot of fun for me, too!” Smith said.
Big Chief’s has been at their location on Main for the last three years, and they’ve had some creative requests before: usually things like letter or number donuts for birthday parties and the like—but this is the first time she’s been asked to make donuts that literally didn’t exist until these second-graders came up with them.
Though the assignment took a couple of weeks, the 15 uniquely decorated donuts were made fresh Friday morning and delivered to McCallum’s creative writing class.
The kids were ecstatic, and more than a little surprised. According to McCallum, one student said “this is so good I’m going to pass out.”
McCallum said the assignment was one of the most successful she’s ever had. “Our class faces the playground, so they’re constantly asking, ‘can we go out and play, now?’ but not this time,” she said, adding that the students were enthralled with their assignment that everything else didn’t seem to matter. “All they cared about was donuts.”
Big Chief’s Donuts and more is open seven days a week, from 4:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
