KALAMAZOO, MI-- The return of warmer weather brings a desire for a cold tasty treat.

The Spirit of Kalamazoo at 154 S. Kalamazoo Mall can satisfy that craving with the choice of 24 flavor options of Plainwell Ice Cream.

The souvenir, T-shirt and ice cream shop will celebrate a decade of serving up cold treats this September.

From staple flavors like strawberry and chocolate to blue moon or pistachio there is a wide variety of flavors to choose from. Customers can get their ice cream in a bowl or sugar, cake or a homemade waffle cone. Customers can also get their choice of ice cream mixed into a malt or milkshake.

The longtime spot also have a variety of toppings to choose from: hot fudge, hot caramel, strawberries, Oreos, Reese’s, or Nestle crumbles, pecans, peanuts, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

Customers have the option of tuning their ice cream into a float using root beer, orange Sunkist or Vernors ginger ale. Creative customers can pick up a soda from the Rocket Fizz candy shop across the street and have that transformed into a float as well.

For those that need an extra caffeine boost, there is the Afternoon Delight, which is a coffee-infused milkshake that is Water Street Coffee mixed with the patron’s choice of salt caramel, vanilla or chocolate ice cream.

Limited seating is available inside and on the patio along the Kalamazoo Mall.

If the ice cream doesn’t lure you in, the spot also sells a wide variety of Kalamazoo and Michigan-themed merchandise and clothing as well as Western Michigan University. They offer a large selection of beer glasses, shot glasses, coffee mugs and water bottles. There are products from brands such as Michigan Awesome, Cherry Republic and Kalamazoo Candle Company.

There’s also a rotating rack of $10 T-shirts.

The Spirit of Kalamazoo is now open five days a week but that will change in May to seven days. Contact the upbeat, downtown shop at 269-382-6249. Here are the current hours of operation:

  • Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Sunday from Noon to 5 p.m.
