GEORGETOWN, DC — Tasty treats abound at Georgetown's baked&wired, which opened April 2001. Customers can find cupcakes, pies, brownies, bars, cookies, quiche, biscotti and more, along with coffee and espresso. But when the coronavirus pandemic hit, co-owners Tony and Teresa Velazquez had to think outside the box like many other business owners.
"We attract all age ranges and demographics from DC and all over the world. We had to pivot to offering same-day pickup and delivery. Before, much of our business was walk-in traffic. But we remained open throughout all of COVID and our community support was still strong," Teresa Velazquez told Patch. "Since the beginning of COVID, we have constantly developed and strengthened our protocols according to the latest CDC recommendations. We installed Plexiglass barriers between the cashiers and the customers. We have numerous sanitation and cleanliness protocols for our staff and customers."
For a quick breakfast pick-me-up, swing by baked&wired and grab a loaf of breakfast bread, granola or quiche. There also are specialty items such as raspberry crunch bars, "phig" newtons, beestings, coconut macaroons and lemon bars.
Those looking for heartier fare can pop in next door at the sister popup restaurant la Betty where diners will find Chef Tani's specialties like American roast chicken, ribs, fish tacos and homey sides and desserts. Another of the family's businesses, abakedjoint, offers packaged spreads, soups and foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner on a carryout or delivery basis, like pizza, quesadillas and pupusas.
