I am pleading with everyone, regardless of which camp you park your allegiance in, please remove yourself from the darkness and walk into the light! Well, not that light, I mean like the light a beautiful sunrise might give. Or that even more beautiful light that a Chick-fil-A gives off after driving 20 hours to visit your sister in Florida, knowing that the taste of that chicken deluxe is going to make that trip all worth it! (My sister does not read this paper, so I am not worried about hurting her feelings.)
We have all been fed a steady stream of politicized misinformation and misinterpretation, seasoned heavily with hate and distrust. It has chipped away at our ability to separate fact from fantasy. We have allowed strangers to plant the seed of doubt and discontent in our hearts, neighbor against neighbor, friend against friend, family against family. And the worst of it all, American against American.
The sun still came up on January 21. Perhaps we need to attempt the world’s biggest DIY project ever, rebuilding the American spirit ourselves, one decent gesture at a time. Democracy is not the foundation on which we build, we are the foundation on which democracy is built.
