There are two things that Kate, one of the patients on episode 7 of Netflix’s Skin Decision, had to look forward to once she completed her physical transformation. The first was a shortened upper lip. The second was a cameo in a Justin Bieber video. Not the typical result of a face lift, but not a bad side effect, either.
As Kate explained when we first met her on the series, “We all go out into the world looking for what we think we need and what we think we deserve. I believed that I was worthless, that I was ugly, and I didn’t deserve to be treated well.” As a younger woman, Kate ended up in an abusive relationship and fled from a husband that beat her. Once she realized her own potential, she sought the help of Dr. Nazarian and Nurse Jamie to sprinkle some of their “surgical fairy dust” on her face to help make her look as good as she feels now that she’s liberated. At age 64, Kate wants to start living her life to the fullest, and after everything she’s been through, she deserves it.
After her consultation with the show’s stars, it was determined that Kate’s transformation should include laser resurfacing of the skin, a lifted jawline, and volume added to the eyes, courtesy of Nurse Jamie. Surgically, Dr. Nazarian administers upper and lower eyelid surgery, and an upper lip lift. (This one put the fear in me. During their meeting, Dr. Nazarian tells Kate that women’s upper lips, especially Caucasian women’s, tend to elongate as we age. Add “Elongated Upper Lip Curtain” to the “Things I Didn’t Know I’d Have to Worry About in 2020” Bingo Card). A V-Lift to eliminate excess skin and transfer fat to the face would round out the procedures to address Kate’s biggest concern, her “neck waddle.”
The end result is nothing short of amazing. Kate, who had previously only expressed her style through an array of unique eyeglasses, looks refreshed and confident in the skin she’s in. The process made her “considerably more courageous” and a risk taker, she says, because without risk, there’s no reward. In the epilogue to her episode, we learned that “Kate’s newfound confidence led her to audition for a Justin Bieber music video. She got the part.” And not just any part. Kate sits at the right hand of The Biebs throughout his “Yummy” video, toasting and feasting with him like the snack she is. (You just know Kate wore those eyeglasses in the audition and they were like “Wardrobe, you can take the day off, this one is all set.”) Not only does she feature prominently throughout the video in her broad tortoise-shell glasses, a red and blue jacket, and pearls, but Kate has quite a few close-ups that highlight the work she had done. It certainly looks like her risks have been rewarded many times over.
