NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- After plenty of starts and stops this spring, Colossal Cupcakes CEO and founder Kelly C. Kandah is excited to announce her popular bakery business is in the process of finally opening its new location at 4615 Great Northern Blvd.
In addition to the pandemic, Colossal Cupcakes’ Euclid Avenue store in downtown Cleveland was heavily damaged by rioters.
“We just finished plans to rebuild in downtown Cleveland, re-opening in late August,” Kandah said. “In the meantime, we’ve been working on our west side store that was supposed to open in early April. Then the virus hit and the riot happened.
“Now, we just finished, so we’re pretty much getting in the flow of things at the North Olmsted store.”
Kandah said the notion of opening a North Olmsted location first became a goal shortly after opening the downtown location more than eight years ago. Not only has she frequented the strip mall for decades, but its vehicular traffic was appealing.
Colossal Cupcakes in theory had a secondary presence prior to the North Olmsted store. For years it had a pop-up store at Crocker Park. However, that wasn’t a full bakery, so when the lease ran out Kandah jumped at the opportunity to move into the 1,300-square-foot Great Northern Boulevard location.
“At Crocker Park we baked downtown and every day sent cupcakes there,” Kandah said. “It was small, and we weren’t able to offer the full ice cream menu. We’re famous for our Cake Shakes and our Cake Quakes, which people were constantly asking about.
“I wanted to be able to offer everything that the downtown store had and improve the quality by being able to bake onsite. That’s why I decided to go bigger in North Olmsted.”
A full bakery specializing in 50 flavors of cupcakes, Colossal Cupcakes boasts brownies and donuts, as well as ice cream and specialty shakes and a full coffee menu. The new North Olmsted location features an expanded menu with the addition of a cotton candy ice cream ice cream burrito, rainbow grilled cheese and glitter cappuccino.
Kandah promised those customers who have never experienced Colossal Cupcakes are in for quite a sugary and tasty treat.
“Our space and menu are like nothing else in Cleveland,” Kandah said. “We’re one of a kind in the country. When you come in here you’ll be very taken back by the décor. We have a lot of local artists who helped us bring these crazy ideas I had to life.
“This was a very celebratory location. I have an epoxy floor that I literally threw confetti all over before it was sealed. It’s just a very cool atmosphere and a very cool menu.”
