WASHINGTON — They say the way through a man’s heart Is through his stomach. Apparently, same for a team, too.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole continued to ingratiate himself with the club when he and veteran outfielder Brett Gardner splurged on a dinner at the team’s hotel on Friday night.

“It was great,” reliever Chad Green said. “Can’t complain about a good steak.”

Cole and Gardner arranged for the meal in a banquet hall. Players kept 6 feet of social distance as they ate, reliever Zack Britton said, and they watched Opening Day games. The Yankees beat the Nationals, 4-1, in their Opening Day game on Thursday at Nationals Park. They were off Friday.

“I think it was great,” Green said. “It’s just a time for guys to get each other more, just to talk about baseball when we’re not actually out there competing.”

Said Britton, “It’s not the same as sitting there next to your teammates, but we kept our distance in the banquet area that we have and we watched some of the games on TV together. The team, if anything, i feel like, we have a little bit more team bonding than in the past. I’m not sure how it’s going to look going forward. The biggest thing is we’re just trying to stay in the hotel and be safe and be healthy.”

Britton explained what it’s like quarantining instead of being able to live a normal life and visit their favorite road haunts.

“Everyone’s trying to keep their distance,” Britton said. “Everything we have available to us at the hotel is a little different. We don’t need to get to the field as early. We have a lot of things we can do at the hotel, whether that’s treatments, working out, advance rooms that we can do our scouting in. I think the Yankees have done a good job in giving us resources at the hotel. It doesn’t feel a whole lot different. Just getting to the field a little bit later is the only thing that’s a little different. But when it comes to being able to get treatment or prepare at the hotel, it’s been great.”
