SPOTTSVILLE, Ky. — Summer is gettting steamy, and what better time to head a few miles out of town and enjoy a balmy early evening on the patio at a local winery with a flight of the house wine or a sweet, icy wine slushie?

Boucherie Vineyards and Winery near Spottsville, Kentucky, is just the spot.

Spottsville is a tiny community east of Henderson on Highway 60, right before it crosses the Green River. As the crow flies, the winery lies only about five miles south of Angel Mounds… but it feels farther away.

Martha and Johnny Boucherie, who own and run the winery with daughters Dedra and Brandy and their families, owned a six-acre hayfield there when Johnny took a work trip to California wine country almost 20 years ago. He returned determined to grow grapes on the land.

The first vines were planted in 2004, the most recent in 2009. Initially, the Boucheries’ plan was to grow and sell grapes to other wineries, but that soon changed.

“You have to make your own market, and it’s not in growing the grapes, it’s in the wine,” Martha said.

“We decided to go ahead and have a winery because the wine grape market is very limited,” Brandy said. “A small vineyard is hugely labor-intensive with work you have to do by hand. You have to prune the vines every year, there’s shoot thinning, grape cluster thinning, leaf thinning, mowing, spraying, picking by hand, and you’re competing with the huge growers. But I think that hands-on feel is part of the draw and nostalgia of a small farm winery.”

So, Boucherie Winery opened in 2013.

In the vineyard, the Boucheries grow seven wine varietals:

Deep red Chambourcin, Norton and Noirette; lighter red Catawba, which makes pretty pink wine; and white Traminette, Chardonel and Aromella.

In addition, they also grow table grapes — Marquette, a deep black grape sometimes used for wine, and Reliance seedless red grapes.

When they ripen in late summer, all these grapes can be purchased by private individuals for winemaking and eating. Regular customers call in orders, they can be purchased at the winery or at the Henderson or Owensboro farmers markets. Two beehives at the winery also provide pollination for veggies and pumpkins the family children sell at local farmers markets.

The list of wines from Boucherie run from very dry reds and whites to semi-sweet and sweet wines.

A new Bourbon barrel-aged blend named Boucherie Barrel Reserve was released in March. It’s a dry blend of Norton and Chambourcin grapes, aged for 5 months in used Bourbon barrels from a Kentucky distillery. Now, you may not only leave with wines to take home but also wine slushies by the liter bag, ready to store in your own freezer.

To accompany your wine, Boucherie offers a cheese plate with cubed cheddar and Colby jack cheeses and a variety of flavored crackers.

Visitors may even indulge in soaps containing Boucherie wine made by Lucy Felty at Lucia Soaps Etc. in Henderson. They can be purchased at the winery or at Lucia Soaps. For gift-giving occasions, have Boucherie assemble a basket for you, with wines, signature glasses, soap and more.

Boucherie has recently built a new bar inside the winery tasting room — which for now is off-limits due to social distancing. The resourceful family also has a bar and counter outside, however. The spacious, pet-friendly covered patio is open with tables distanced, and they have added a large pavilion with additional seating. The winery, at this time, can be booked for outdoor parties, showers and so forth, although social distancing rules should be followed.

Several times a year the winery offers live music events with food trucks, always free to enter. The music has been on hold this spring, but watch the Facebook page for dates as the summer progresses. At events with food trucks, it's fun to visit Kentucky trucks we rarely see in Evansville such as Tri-R-Tips Hawaiian Style BBQ, Up in Smoke and J’s Good Grub.

Fans of Boucherie’s vintages may find the wine at the winery, the Beverage Barn in Henderson, 54 Wine and Spirits in Owensboro, Hometown Roots in Henderson, Izzy’s Italian Restaurant in Morganfield and seasonally at the Henderson and Owensboro farmers markets.
