BRUNSWICK, Ohio --- Along with other businesses designated by the city as door-to-door solicitors, Celeste’s Tasty Treats owner, Celeste Compola, was issued a vendor’s permit June 1, allowing her to operate her ice cream truck in the city.
The city had stopped issuing permits to all door to door vendors in March, following guidelines set by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Compola, who has operated her truck in the city for the past three years, applied for her permit, and was denied, in April.
City Manager Carl DeForest said that while some of the state’s COVID-19 recommendations could be considered “subjective,” the city’s decision regarding vendors’ permits applied equally to all businesses that fell under that categorization. Likewise, DeForest said, the city’s decision to begin issuing the permits again came after the state’s loosening of its COVID-19 restrictions May 26, allowing the reopening of businesses such as gyms and recreation centers.
“We thought that if we are opening gyms and the Rec Center, it seems reasonable to issue vendors permits,” DeForest said.
Meanwhile, the issue of whether a business such as Compola’s should have ever been considered a type of door to door sales is expected to again be taken up by Brunswick City Council at its next regular meeting, June 8.
As she handed out ice cream in the parking lot of Brunswick City Hall after being issued her permit, Compola said she is happy to get back to work in her hometown.
“I didn’t expect this or ask for it, but in hindsight I’m happy it happened the way it did,” she said of the two-month delay and subsequent support of her past, current and likely future customers in Brunswick.
“As far as the community goes, (before this situation) I guess I didn’t know how much people cared,” Compola said.
