MINOOKA, IL— I've spent a lot of time during these past months producing articles on Joliet restaurants as they reopen or adjust their business models amid the new coronavirus pandemic. Last week, I drove to Minooka. I wanted to check out a small, successful locally owned fast-food restaurant at 438 West Mondamin St.

I'm talking about the Tasty Bite.

Tasty Bite has something for everybody. The menu includes gyros, Italian beef and tacos. There are hot dogs, burgers, steak sandwiches, fried chicken, fish, shrimp baskets, burritos, tostadas, quesadilla, chicken strips, fish sandwiches and grilled chicken sandwiches.

Tasty Bite offers a dozen different value meals. Want to eat healthy? There are five varieties of salads. All five of the kids meals are priced at $3.99.

The cheapest value meal on the adult menu is the five-piece chicken strips at $7.24. The most expensive value meal is the $9.75 ribeye steak that comes with grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese.

During my visit to Minooka, I went with one of the value meals, the poor boy steak sandwich for $8.99. All value meals come with fries and a pop.

During these past few months, Tasty Bite took orders over the phone and did curbside. Now, customers can come inside to place their orders. Tasty Bite set up a handful of outdoor patio tables so people like me can enjoy their meal while enjoying the summer weather.

After finishing my meal, I spoke with Tasty Bite owner, Emre Kok, as he was cleaning outside.

A Minooka resident, he also owns the Fill-A-Cup Yogurt store. He told me that Tasty Bite is best known for its gyros. "There is no other place you can get a better gyros and the Italian beef is one of the top sellers," he remarked.

When I told Tasty Bite's owner that I ordered the poorboy, he said that was a good choice. The poorboy has a seasoned meat that a lot of customers like, he added.

Kok said he has been with Tasty Bite for 10 years. When he came to Minooka, he said, he did not speak English, and he worked as a dishwasher at the restaurant. By 2016, he said proudly, he became the Tasty Bite owner. Nowadays, he also owns Fill-A-Cup Yogurt.

As for Tasty Bite, he draws most of his customers from the Minooka area and between Ottawa and Plainfield. He said there are a couple of out of state families who make it a point to visit Tasty Bite a couple times every year when they are passing through the region.

Kok told Patch he is fortunate to have so many regular customers.

"And that's what made us survive through the whole pandemic," he told me. "The repeat customers are out on social media and our customers showed a huge support in our survival."

Tasty Bite is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays.

Tasty Bite is easy to find. It's at the corner of Ridge Road and Mondamin Street at the Parker Square business plaza.

To call ahead for faster pickup service, Tasty Bite's phone number is 815-521-9300.

Otherwise, customers can n0w walk inside and place their order at the counter.
