Daughter-in-law Ginger excitedly invited me to accompany the family to Lumpy’s Ice Cream home-made ice cream store in downtown Wake Forest on Friday evening after supper. I knew she would require coronavirus measures, so I readily accepted.

We donned our face masks, and most of us never got out of the car. It was the first time I’ve been out of my apartment and gone downtown in weeks.

Granddaughter Ruthie wanted to give her pup Reba some exercise, so they opted to walk/jog from our home down to Lumpy’s. She had a head start, but I was still surprised to see that she was already there waiting outside for us when we arrived.

This is what each one of us ordered: Jimmy, strawberry milkshake; Ginger, coconut with caramel topping; Ruthie, Scotch maple cone; Maggie, sweet cream cone; Mae, vanilla milkshake; and Bob, pineapple cone.

How did we order everything differently with only one person going inside?

Very simple — we got the menu on a cell phone and Ruthie noted each order. Only one person went inside, and that was Ruthie, who then jogged back home. All of these things were good ways to stem the transfer of the virus going around.

Jimmy picked up the tab. Ginger agreed to drive through town because I had not been there for several months.

66th wedding anniversary

Peggy Garren and I were married on June 19 in 1954 in Asheville’s West Asheville Baptist Church with only my brother, Bill, my mother, Evelyn, and step-father, Oliver T. Justice, attending for me and many relatives on Peggy’s side because Asheville was her home.

Peggy passed away on Nov. 1, 2005, and is sorely missed after 51 years of being together, producing The Wake Weekly, raising four sons and visiting the mountains of North Carolina at Asheville and Grandfather Mountain many times together.
