Gunther Werks has officially entered the world of air-cooled Porsche restomods as the first customer example of its 993-based 400R is completed, claiming that this is even better than the original red show car they revealed almost three years ago.
Matt Farah had another go to see what’s what in this rather tasty Olive Green example, the first of the just 25 400Rs Gunther Werks is planning to build.
The concept behind the 400R is what would have happened if Porsche kept developing the air-cooled 993 until today and judging by looks alone, we feel obligated to acknowledge Gunther Werks’ vision. The finished car looks simply spectacular, with the wider body and the ducktail spoiler perfectly integrated into the classic 993 shape like it came this way from the factory.

Pretty much everything has changed on the 400R, from the bodywork -which is now made out of carbon- to its beautiful engine – a Rothsport Racing naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six jewel kicking out 430 HP and 357 lb-ft (484 Nm) of torque.
The changes from the show car to this first production example include everything from fine-tuning the coilover suspension, different software for the engine, different second and third gear ratios to better fit canyon driving, and more. It’s a different kind of animal from the Singer 911s as it adopts a slightly more modern approach, and let’s not forget the exclusivity.
In addition, all this added carbon everywhere resulted in a car that’s 200 lbs (90 kg) than the 993, tipping the scales at just 2,500 lbs (1133 kg). It’s safe to say that when combined with that 430 HP ($250k!) race engine, the Gunther Werks 400R is one pretty special Porsche.
