Three red wines highlight this week: a bright fruity nerello mascalese from Sicily, an earthy cabernet franc from the Loire Valley and a silky pinot noir from Oregon.
GREAT VALUE
Cantine Ermes Vento di Mare Nerello Mascalese 2021
Sicily, Italy, $15
Nerello mascalese is the main red grape of eastern Sicily and the base for the highly sought-after wines from vineyards around Mount Etna. This delicious example doesn’t have the depth and minerality — or price — of an Etna Rosso, but it does feature the bright acid and flavors of red currant, raspberry and plum characteristic of the grape. Certified organic. Alcohol by volume: 13.5 percent. Bottle weight: 421 grams (Light).
Imported by Cantine Ermes. Distributed locally by Impero Wine USA.
Château Yvonne “La Folie” Saumur Champigny 2021
Loire Valley, France, $25
Here’s a textbook cabernet franc, with juicy cherry flavors scented with olive and tea. The balance features lively acidity from a traditionally cool vintage in the Loire Valley after a series of warmer years. ABV: 13.5 percent. BW: 594 grams (Average).
Imported and distributed locally by Elite Wines.
Willful Pinot Noir 2021
Willamette Valley, Ore., $30
Winemaker Pam Walden sources fruit for this silky pinot noir from vineyards throughout Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Its dark berry and cherry flavors carry a few baking spice notes, making it an excellent partner for duck, pork or salmon dishes. ABV: 14 percent. BW: 470 grams (Light).
Distributed locally by Salveto Imports & Distribution.
Prices are approximate. For availability, check Wine.com, Wine-searcher.com and the websites and social media feeds of the wineries, importers, distributors, and your favorite local wine store.
