Is it too early to start thinking about Thanksgiving pie?
No way — especially if you plan to order one from a Springfield-area bakery. Most business owners appreciate orders as soon as possible and many have cut-off dates for requests. If you don’t buy pie in advance, you will probably have to settle for frozen or for a grocery store pick if you don’t want to make your own.
So where can you get a silky pumpkin, a cinnamon-kissed apple or a Southern pecan pie? Here are some options.
Prairie Pie
When many people take a bite of Prairie Pie, it’s love at first bite. Owner Eleanor Taylor loves cake, but there were plenty of cake bakers in Springfield so she decided to fill a void and make pie. She started small, making mini pies and custom orders, and grew to the point where she opened a storefront downtown.
Now her pie business is thriving and she is known for some unique flavors like matcha and cinnamon buttermilk. The week of Thanksgiving, though, she limits her selection to seven traditional flavors and they are all 10-inch pies.
Her crust is incredibly buttery and flakey. Her apple pie is stellar, her chocolate pecan elevates the classic and her honey sea salt pie is a honey custard dusted with a little sea salt. It’s rich and delicious, and a nice variation for the holidays.
Orders must be placed by Sunday, Nov. 19. You can pick up your order from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 21-22 and 9 a.m.-noon on Thanksgiving. Pies are $35.
Common Grounds Coffee Café & Bakery
Common Grounds Coffee Café & Bakery in Strafford has a variety of lovely pies available by preorder, especially if you like fruit pies. Typically, they require two business days to fill orders, but during Thanksgiving, all orders must be in by Saturday, Nov. 18.
Try a classic pumpkin or pecan pie, or go for a fruit pie, such as blackberry, apple, cherry, strawberry/rhubarb, blueberry or peach. The blackberry is delicious! It’s hard to find strawberry/rhubarb, so that’s an old-school pick. If you prefer cream pies, then try a coconut cream or chocolate cream pie. They also sell old-fashioned raisin pie and homemade rolls that taste a lot like grandma’s.
Whole pies are $24.99. Pickup orders by 2 p.m. on Nov. 22. They are open 7 a.m.-4 p.m. on Nov. 21 and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. the day before Thanksgiving.
The Pie Box
Chef Ryan Tiller, owner of the Pie Box in Nixa, is a huge fan of pie and it shows. Throughout the year he has an impressive array of varieties, but — like many bakeries — he scales back the selection for the holiday week. He also has some gluten-free and sugar-free options.
During Thanksgiving, the bestsellers are pumpkin, pumpkin crunch, pecan and caramel apple. The caramel apple has options for a double crust or crumb top. What’s pumpkin crunch? It starts with traditional pumpkin with caramel and then it’s topped with a pecan butter crumb baked on top.
Tiller stops taking orders roughly Nov. 16 or 17, whenever he reaches capacity, so if you want one of his pies, order now.
If you are not into traditional flavors, Tiller is known for his incredibly rich French silk pie and his peanut butter cup, with creamy peanut butter and rich chocolate. The pies range from $23.95-$27.95. Orders must be picked up at the bakery by 3 p.m. Nov. 22 in Nixa.
Kaykay’s Baked Goods
For the past six months, Mikayla Arthur has been running Kaykay’s Baked Goods out of her home in Willard. The stay-at-home mother of two has always had a passion for baking and wanted to earn some extra income while she cares for her kiddos.
Arthur is known for her sourdough bread with unusual flavors, like chocolate or jalapeno cheddar, but she is adding pies to her menu for the holidays.
Orders are due by Nov. 15 and must be picked up by Nov. 22. You can order a traditional pumpkin or pecan pie, opt for a candy bar pie made with your favorite candy bar, or order a fruit pie (apple, cherry, peach, blueberry or strawberry). Her pies range from $15-$20.
Arthur’s aunt is one of the owners of 4×4 Brewing in Springfield, so pickups at the brewery can be arranged for people outside of Willard but must be set up directly with Arthur (don’t call the brewery about it).
Women In Need’s 20th Annual Wild Turkey Bake Sale
If you are someone who waits for the last minute, you might still be able to score a pie at Women In Need’s 20th Annual Wild Turkey Bake Sale.
Every year, this nonprofit rounds up volunteers who bake homemade pies, cakes, cookies and side dishes for Thanksgiving and they have a big sale at Uncle Bently’s Pub and Lounge. The doors open at noon on Nov. 22, the day before Thanksgiving. Get there early for the best selection because these are all donated goods and the cost and availability of pie varies. They wrap them up beautifully, so if you’re going somewhere for Thanksgiving, this is a great item to bring.
Women In Need of the Ozarks helps single women, working at least 35 hours per week, who have a one-time need. It’s designed to help keep women out of poverty and tackle emergency issues. For example, if you’re a working mom whose car breaks down but you don’t have the money to fix it, then you might be an unemployed mom pretty soon and that can spiral into worse things.
This nonprofit helps fill the gaps of some other organizations in the Springfield area and often helps women who don’t qualify for assistance elsewhere, so you can eat pie and help the community at the same time.
