PEARISBURG, Va. – Samantha McCroskey opened Sugar and Flour in downtown Pearisburg months ago, but tells us, “Even from a young age, I showed my love and affection through food.”
For more than a decade, she’s been busy baking things like cakes and cookies for friends and for private clients. It may surprise you, then, that she initially said no to owning her own shop.
The pandemic made her re-consider, thinking, “I can keep a small menu but keep it interesting by switching it up every week.”
That’s what she’s done ever since. When we visited, she was hammering away at everything bagels and her best seller, the cinnamon rolls. Her freshly made dough, butter and a blend of cinnamon sugar get rolled up and thrown in the oven.
When asked about recipes, she simply answered, “I measure with my heart.”
At lunch time, she says the taco salad goes out the door in a flash.
“I make the tortilla bowl and just fill them with all kinds of deliciousness.”
It goes to show she’s mastered everything from sweet to savory in this new endeavors of hers.
Now that summer is approaching, you can’t go wrong with one of her refreshing and homemade cold brews.
“Last month, we had the cinnamon roll and the sugar cookie. And then this month, we’ll be rolling out our summer menu which has some really exciting flavors.”

The sweetness at Sugar and Flour goes beyond the flavor palette, but toward a scholarship for high school students. McCroskey says, “It would just be so good to feel like I was helping someone be able to follow their dream like I followed mine.”
She says she hopes to broaden the scholarship out to a few more schools within the county next year.
Now that she and her bakery are established, McCroskey tells us her goal is to help beautify downtown Pearisburg even more.
