STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Welcome back to The Dish, broadcast weekly from the Staten Island Advance/SILIVE.com’s Facebook page. The show dishes on the borough’s dynamic food industry and takes a behind-the-scenes look at some of the unique businesses cooking for the community.
This week’s episode lands us at Filled, a Filipino bakery and breakfast house. On the menu is silog — a banana leaf-lined plate with garlic fried rice (sinangag), meat such as longganisa sausage or sauteed beef tips called tapa to pair with an over-easy egg. Because of that particular dish Filled is dubbed a “Silog House” and it is the only one of its kind in New York City.
Open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Christian-themed cafe at 400 Victory Blvd., Tompkinsville; 347-857-6360) was inspired by the “church family” of proprietors Ellen San Miguel and Kats Alvir.
In the Philippines, Ellen and Kats sang professionally. Their love for music now translates to their restaurant with Saturday night live music from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. They can seat up to 10 guests — it’s reservation only — at each session.
For a small cafe there is much to experience at Filled. So take peek at the accompanying video as the scent of fresh bread, a specialty at the cafe, wafts through the dining room.
Filled fun fact: Ellen and Kats say prayers just before putting dishes together. So all the food comes with good blessings.
Last week, our travels took us to Beverage Island at 66 Willow Avenue in Rosebank with its new 32,000 square-foot beer and soft drink warehouse. Next week we’re headed to another breakfast spot. See where we end up as you tune into The Dish at Wednesday, 9 a.m.
