Gardening is hard.
It's not easy to coax vegetables out of the ground and when you're pulling off yet another caterpillar of your greens you can find yourself wondering: "What's the point?"
The obvious answer is that it tastes better when it's fresh but that's really just the beginning.
Fresh produce is often more nutritious and eating seasonal, local produce is a good way to get some of the extra nutrients you need, when you need them.
Jamie Harson of Scratch Kitchen says: "In the summer we grow a lot of okra, and okra is good at helping regulate heat."
The benefits go on from there, the resources required to get your food from the ground to your plate is reduced and you can control the kinds of pesticides and chemicals your ingesting.
Not everyone has the space to garden though, and for those there's always local farmer's markets and growers which give you the chance to enjoy some of the benefits of local produce.
So without a doubt growing your own fresh vegetables makes for a much tastier meal, but the benefits don't simply end at taste.
It's better for you and better for the planet, and it certainly makes all the work required worth it.
