Lions are some of the most fearsome predators on the planet and together, can take down some of the largest prey on the plains of Africa. That being said, they can also be pretty silly, especially the male lions. As this viral video shows, male lions are sometimes so concerned with showing off how big and strong they are that they miss out on a sneaky lioness making away with their kill!
The funny video (make sure you check it out below) begins with a pride of lions that has just made a kill. Two males are taking their share of the meat first, as they usually do in lion society. But as they eat, they end up breaking into a full-on brawl, despite being two brothers! The brother lions start growling, roaring, and chasing each other around, all because they don’t want to share their food with one another (classic brothers).

During this whole shebang, however, a sneaky female lion notices what is going on and decides it’s the perfect opportunity to sneak in and take her own share of the food while the boys are distracted. She calmly walks up to the carcass, grabs a large chunk of meat, and walks away with it. The sneaky lioness then enjoys her meal in peace, while the males are still fighting.
Who is really in charge of the pride? Well, it looks like we know who the smartest lion is! This female lion shows that sometimes brains can beat brawn, and that being sneaky can pay off. She also demonstrates that lionesses are not just passive followers of the males, but active participants in the pride’s survival.
This video, while being a little funny, shows us some of the complex social behaviors of lions. Males are the ones that eat first, but often, meals can turn into fights when one of the males feels the need to assert itself over the other, even if they are brothers. Females are the ones who actually do most of the hunting, even though they rarely eat first. Even still, the girls usually get what they want, that’s something that crosses culture and species! Next time you see a lion pride, don’t underestimate the power of the females. They might just surprise you with their cleverness!
