ANN ARBOR, MI - Throw a rock, you hit a tasty joint for food near University of Michigan’s campus. Stumble around on a weekend, and you’ll find a good party, too.

This view placed UM in the top-five top schools nationally for student life, according to results compiled by Niche, a company that ranks schools to help students find good fits for future college students.

The Ann Arbor-based university is ranked No. 5 on the list, which is topped by University of Southern California. Next is University of California - Los Angeles, followed by University of Georgia and then UM’s Big Ten peer University of Wisconsin.

Driving the high marks for UM was an “A-plus” grade for its party scene and an “A” for its campus food. Niche based the score on metric analysis and feedback from students, who talked about the plethora of party opportunities between Wednesday through Saturday nights during the school year, as well as tailgating on football Saturdays.

In addition, Niche noted UM has a vibrant Greek Life, as 17% of the undergraduate male students are in a fraternity and nearly a quarter of all women are in a sorority.

Overall, student life received an “A-plus” grade “based on campus diversity, social scene, student reviews, and additional factors,” Niche wrote. According to a March 2021 report on UM campus diversity, about 26% of the campus community is an ethnic or racial minority and 11% is international.

The dormitory food received high marks, with the favorite cafeterias residing in South Quad, East Quad and Mosher Jordan Hall. The favorite non-university food in a student poll is at bars such as The Brown Jug or Charley’s on South University Avenue or Chipotle and Big Ten Burrito on State Street.

One area that did not grade as well was campus safety, which received a “B.” This ranking is “based on crimes on campus, local area crime rates, and student reviews.” Two recent controversies on campus involve various examples of sexual misconduct by teachers towards students over the last few years, as well as a serial assaulter of woman in downtown Ann Arbor who is now facing charges.

On July 15, UM announced a slate of changes it’s making to its sexual misconduct policies, which include the creation of the Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office to investigate its cases of misconduct and the addition of staff to help make survivors more comfortable in reporting incidents.

Other changes include prohibiting teacher-student relationships, a process to revoke emeritus status and more.

With that said, 81% of students reported to Niche that they feel “extremely safe and secure” on campus, and further reported that campus police are “there if you need them but not overbearing.”

Niche also graded UM well in various other areas, including “A-plus” grades for academics, athletics, professors and overall value.
