Historic Washington, Arkansas, hosted the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth’s Watermelon Weigh-Off on Saturday morning. Josh Williams, curator of Historic Washington State Park, MCed the event, which included watermelons, two pumpkins, a marrow (a type of European gourd), and a bushel gourd.
A lively crowd gathered around as judges Kim Rowe, Jon Barry, Austin Haines, Beckie Moore, and Josh Wiliams first measured, then weighed the gigantic specimens. Many weighed over 150 pounds, but the king of the melon patch proved to be over 200 pounds.
Tony Prochaska, of Kansas, brought in the heaviest melon at 204 pounds. Prochaska also claimed the Kansas state record for his marrow at 61 pounds and a field pumpkin at 76 pounds. Second place for the adult growers was Barbara Bright-Jones at 187 pounds, and third place went to Lloyd Bright at 178 pounds.
In the young growers category, Jack Waddell, of Oklahoma, took first place with a 170 pound specimen. Second place went to Jacob Prochaska at 153 pounds, and third place went to Paxton Lindley, of Wynne, Arkansas, at 152 pounds.
