Hannah Waddingham talks ‘Ted Lasso’ season 2 -- and those tasty biscuits - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The first first season of the tender-hearted comedy, “Ted Lasso,” was a welcomed diversion in 2020, offering an escape from the pandemic and a tumultuous summer of civil unrest and vitriolic politics. The show -- starring Jason Sudeikis an American football coach hired to manage, and unknowingly sabotage, the British soccer team AFC Richmond -- returns for its second season Friday, July 23, on Apple TV+.

When we last left the recently divorced Ted Lasso, AFC Richmond, the squad had been relegated while owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) gave her unlikely coach a vote of confidence by rejecting his resignation.

“Believe” indeed remains the theme for the second season, which kicks off with AFC Richmond in the middle of a long streak of ties.

We caught up with Waddingham to chat about the success of “Ted Lasso,” the appeal of playing Rebecca and whether AFC Richmond will turn it around? Waddingham also stars in Netflix’s “Sex Education” and plays the role of Jax-Ur in “Krypton.” Until her star turn in “Ted Lasso,” she was perhaps best known for her “Game of Thrones” shame nun Septa Unella.

Hello Hannah, what can fans expect in season 2?

The most important thing is, you can expect the no-holds-barred continues and it expands for all characters, which I’m so thrilled about. They haven’t shied away from showing the ugly underneath the rug. And it’s universal. You see every single character flesh out more. I definitely think it’s funnier and more heartwarming -- if that’s at all possible.

Are you surprised by the success of “Ted Lasso”?

I was originally because I don’t think any of us knew exactly what it was. Once you see it all spliced together and watch it as an audience member, several of us got on our group chat afterwards and were like, “It’s not about football at all.” I don’t think we realized that because you’re plowing, getting your scenes on and you feel like you’re almost going scene to scene so you don’t look at the arc and the vibe of the whole thing. That’s what struck us all. And, of course, there are a lot of things I didn’t let in on purpose. I didn’t let any of Ted’s storyline out of Rebecca’s office at all. I would just be like (fingers in ears) “blah, blah, blah, blah, can’t hear you,” even on read-throughs. So to see all of that play out with his wife and son and the cookies, I had no idea that he baked the cookies until I saw it on television.

Considering the success of the first season, did you feel added pressure going into the second season?

Yeah, there was the pressure we all put on us because we know how beloved it is and you don’t want to let anyone down. Thankfully, the writers obviously don’t think like that because they’re beating their own drum and they know what it is. I just think the writing has gone to another level in season 2 for every character. I can’t wait for everyone to see it, really.

What appealed to you about the role of Rebecca, who in theory early on we shouldn’t love but she ends up becoming so endearing?

It’s the fact that when we find her everyone thinks they’ve got the measure of her and then very soon you see the façade slip for the first time. It’s so sad that she had her heart ripped out and smashed on the floor, and her only way of coping is to put up this porcelain wall. She thinks her way through the retribution. The audience realized very early on that she just desperately needs to be held or hugged -- whether it’s Ted or Keeley or the team as a whole. The transition from season 1 to season 2 finds her absolutely accepting that love from the team. That’s her new family.

Finally, what do you think Rebecca learned from Ted?

Ted’s already won her over in that he has made her realize the answer is not retribution. The answer is to smash every single dream that (ex-husband) Rupert had for that team and then some. Kill him with positivity.
