Moving festival locations requires a good bit of logistical planning — enough that Phillipsburg’s Pork Roll Palooza took a year off in order to revamp the festival now hosted by Shappell Park. The planning gets taken to another level when partway through that year off, the country is hit with a global pandemic. But the Palooza is rolling with it.
The pork roll-centric festival is back in Phillipsburg this year after its first two years along the Delaware River were a rapturous success, enough that the festival had to re-plan the event for a better space, eventually landing on Shappell Park. So the festival is on this year, but unfortunately, so is the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, Pork Roll Palooza will carry on with plenty of safety measures in place.
The festival kicks off on Oct. 17 at 11 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m. In the past, the festival has had plenty of vendors, contests and entertainment for the nearly 3,000 guests that attended. This year, there’ll be fewer vendors and Phillipsburg officials ask that you take your delicious pork roll plate to-go. In accordance with New Jersey safety mandates, the limit on festival attendees at one time is 500.
It’s encouraged to stop by and grab some grub before heading out, but if you want to enjoy some time in the park, the festival will have live music from Naked Jake, Young Lion and Video Daze for the afternoon, starting at 11:30 a.m. Lawn seats or blankets are encouraged.
Masks are required, of course, so make sure you’re properly distanced before rolling that mask away from your mouth and rolling the pork into it.
The festival’s Facebook page and website, porkrollpalooza.org, have more information and will be updated in the coming week with parking information and more.
