Local Eats: 794 Kitchen & Bar in Muskegon puts a tasty twist on classic American cuisine - MLive.com

MUSKEGON, MI -- 794 Kitchen & Bar serves a variety of creative and delicious dishes in downtown Muskegon.

Owner Jim Noel, restaurateur for over 30 years, opened the casual eatery in July 2019 with the hopes to shake things up in the area. Already the owner of two local pizza establishments, he wanted to step away from what was familiar to bring more options to the folks of Muskegon, he said.

“My philosophy in the restaurant business has always been to create a great product at a fair price,” said Noel.

With exposed brick, high ceilings and raw-edge wood tables, the restaurant located at 794 Pine St., offers diners a beautiful modern-industrial space in which to enjoy their food. The plethora of windows also fills the restaurant with natural light.

794 prides itself on providing quality food at reasonable prices so a wide variety of folks may enjoy the dining experience, Noel said. The restaurant also has vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes to fit several diets.

Complete with expansive drink offerings and affordable prices, the restaurant offers “a little something for everyone,” said Cody Christensen, head chef at 794 and previous owner of Handsome Henry’s.

Since re-vamping their entire menu, the most popular dishes at the restaurant have become their crab ragoon nachos, warm goat cheese dip with cheddar ale crostini and weekend brunch, said Christensen. Overall, he said the new menu is more takeout and catering friendly and are centered around more readily available products.

There are more additions in the works, including a Bloody Mary bar for brunch. Christensen says there are hopes to sell pre-packaged signature jams and sauces in the future.

Due to the location, Noel said the restaurant does not provide curbside service but has seen a lot of carry-out business as of late. Online ordering and delivery are also in the process of being developed.

After a three-month closure due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant re-opened in June once Michigan restaurants were allowed to resume dining service with safety restrictions.

In the event of future mandatory closure, Noel plans to implement a revised service plan that would include options for curbside service and delivery.

Noel said 794 has a completely different atmosphere than his restaurant, Capone’s Speakeasy & Pizzeria. Although it is in the same building, Capone’s has much lower lighting and an easy-to-miss entrance resembling the speakeasies of the 1920s.

As the owner of three Muskegon restaurants, Noel has had his hands full implementing a variety of changes to keep them afloat amid the global pandemic. This includes safety precautions to protect both employees and the public from COVID-19.

“It in part makes it difficult to remain profitable because of the reduced (capacity)," he said. "Obviously, it’s had a big impact on business from the seating aspect but also from the aspect of people (not) wanting to go out and sit and eat.”

Although the restaurant has seen a 25% reduction in staff compared to before the pandemic, Noel said staff members have made the transitions much smoother as the navigate their “new normal."

Sanitization efforts have increased and customers are asked to wear a mask when not at their table. Staff members get their temperatures checked prior to each shift and wear a mask and gloves while working.

Noel says he does not know what the future may hold, but he hopes to continue to provide quality food to the Muskegon area regardless of what challenges come their way. Online ordering and delivery options may become available in the near future.

The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The phone number is 231-246-2851. Keep up with 794 Kitchen & Bar on Facebook or visit their website.
