Mark Selby completed a hard-fought 13-7 victory over Gary Wilson in the second round of the World Snooker Championship to book his place in the quarter-finals at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

The 39-year-old, who is seeking a fifth world title this fortnight, held a strong 10-6 lead ahead of Monday's evening session but still needed to ensure that Wilson could not find his groove and repel his opponent in the dogged fashion he is known for.

Selby could not have kicked off the night in a more impressive fashion as he breezed through a comprehensive break of 109 to immediately put Wilson under the cosh with a five-frame lead as he immediately established the momentum.

The duo then traded frames as the Crucible crowd implored Wilson to force a prolonged contest in the evening session, despite Selby making every stint at the table as uncomfortable as possible for his opponent.

The Jester from Leicester had to almost apologetically ask the crowd if they had enjoyed the action as he and Wilson limped through a desperately dull opening session on Saturday evening as eight frames seemed interminable. Happily, this session was more fluent as Selby re-established a five-frame lead with a majestic cut on the black with the long rest a highlight.

What proved to be the final frame of the evening proved to be a very scrappy affair with fouls traded in lengthy safety exchanges, but Selby managed to find a way through in the end to clinch the victory and secure his place in the quarter-finals.

Selby will next take on John Higgins, who also has four world titles to his name, in what will be an eagerly-anticipated encounter at the Crucible.

As Higgins has already highlighted in scathing terms, the pair find themselves in the quarter of the draw that will have to slog it out through back-to-back sessions in their last-eight clash.

The decorated pair will have to lock horns in the afternoon session on Tuesday, and then the afternoon and evening sessions on Wednesday in what will be a demanding itinerary.

In the match on the other table, Jack Lisowski made a lightning-fast start to the evening as he roared through the opening three frames to take a hefty chunk out of the deficit and leave Anthony McGill with a thousand-yard-stare sat in his chair.

McGill, who had taken a commanding 11-5 lead into the session, could not have found the going tougher early on as he sat seemingly bolted to his seat.

The match continued with McGill desperately trying to fend off his doughty opponent, and he duly managed to do so as Lisowski ultimately came up short having given himself much too much work to do following a disastrous opening session to the match.

McGill was typically smart around the table as he closed out the victory, and the Scot will next take on debutant and rising star Si Jiahui in a fascinating quarter-final encounter.
