One lucky crawfish won't be showing up hot, red and juicy on restaurant platters or newspaper-draped tables at homes this spring.
Continuing a tradition that began in 2017, Louisiana Lieutenant Gov. Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board on Tuesday pardoned crawfish Firmin in a ceremony at the Crawfish Capital of the World, Breaux Bridge.
The annual pardoning event celebrates crawfish along the Gulf South and in Louisiana, which is the largest domestic producer of crawfish, generating about 150 million pounds a year.
Breaux Bridge hosts an annual crawfish festival in May that draws thousands to the St. Martin Parish community.
Firmin the crawfish was selected by Barry Toups, owner of Crawfish Haven, then was transported to Parc Des Ponts Breaux along the Bayou Teche. There, Firmin reigned over a procession attended by students of St. Bernard School who waved crawfish flags and wore crawfish beads.
Festival queens from around the state along with local officials attended to witness the official pardon of Firmin with a proclamation delivered by Nungesser to the St. Martin Parish Tourism commission and the city of Breaux Bridge.
The lucky crawfish is named in honor of Firmin Breaux who built the first footbridge across Bayou Teche. The bridge became known as Breaux's Bridge, which would become the name of the city when it was officially founded by his daughter-in-law Scholastique Breaux.
Following the ceremony, representatives with the Louisiana Office of State Parks transported Firmin to Lake Fausse Point State Park in St. Martinville where he was released to live a long life, hopefully to die of natural causes and not in a boiling pot of water.
