FLINT, MI -- FLINT, MI – As hundreds walk the floor of the Flint Farmers’ Market searching for their favorite vendors and foods straight from the source, there is a bar on the second floor slinging drinks.

That bar is Market Tap.

And they make a unique Farmers’ Market Bloody Mary chocked full of some of your favorite market vendors’ foods.

“It’s more than just tomato juice. A good bloody mary, like ours, has a good base with a great bloody mary mix. I add horseradish. We don’t use Worcestershire, but instead a molasses bitters that tastes just like it,” said Rachel Kaiser, head bartender at Market Tap. “We can make it to your liking, spicy or not. This drink is basically a beverage lunch.

“Last Saturday, we put up a bloody mary bar, and everyone who had one loved it. When someone sees one at the bar, they go ‘Ooooh,’ and it’s usually a domino effect from there. People love to order them once someone has one.”

The bloody mary features items from cheese to meat to pretzels from vendors throughout the Flint Farmers’ Market, located at 300 E. First Street in downtown Flint.

With a base of McClure’s Pickles bloody mary mix and Valentine Distilling Company vodka, the drink is complete with:

• A chunk of cheese from Hills’ Cheese

• A beef stick from J Dean’s Smoked Meats

• Vegetables from Steady Eddy’s Veggies

• Pretzels from d’Vine Wines

• Pickled asparagus from Michigan at the Market

• A McClure’s pickle

“We wanted to take a healthier approach to it,” said Andrea Bergstrom, Market Tap general manager. “You know a lot of loaded bloody marys have a slider or fried chicken, but we’re the bar at the market and wanted to do something that matches the energy of the market.

“Some of our best customers are market vendors, most of our regulars work at the market. We’re like a family around here.”

The bar opened in 2016, shortly after the market opened and have always been Michigan-made since day one.

With 12 taps going at all times, Bergstrom said you can get a great taste of Michigan.

She said the bar hosts beer from at least 50 different breweries across Michigan, and has about 20 backup kegs at all times ready to tap.

The bar also features six to eight new cocktails every month, Bergstrom said.

“We pride ourselves on turning over all of the Michigan craft beers pretty quickly. We’re changing kegs every day up here,” she said. “We have a really good can selection of Michigan craft beer and cider, as well as a variety of Michigan wines.”

While Market Tap itself doesn’t serve food, Bergstrom said they work with a number of chefs and vendors for pop-up events, such as chef Tony Vu who runs the Vietnamese eatery MaMang inside the farmers’ market, Chubby Duck or Mr. Prince Tacos to name a few others.

In January, the bar hosted a comedy show featuring local comedians. The bar frequently features acoustic entertainment throughout the year and, as the weather warms, they’ll have full bands on the outdoors balcony.

During the colder months, the balcony is transformed into the “Winter Bar,” with seating outside with heaters as well, Bergstrom said.

Kaiser has bartended for 13 years at a number of bars around Flint and Flint Township. She’s been the familiar face behind the bar at Market Tap for more than a year now.

She likes to make a lot of infusions and currently has a strawberry vodka and a peppermint vodka for customers, Bergstrom said.

Kaiser said she specializes in the art of the old-fashioned cocktail and claims to make the best one in town.

“I passionately love drinking, so I love to make drinks,” Kaiser said. “If you don’t know the product you’re selling, how are you supposed to sell it? People are always surprised saying, ‘Oh, you know a lot about beer.’ Well, I love beer. Or, ‘You know a lot about cocktails.’ I love cocktails.”

Market Tap is open from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, 5-10 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
