BIG RAPIDS — Although she has traveled across the world honing her cooking skills, for Nawal Braden Swart, Big Rapids will always be home.
As the owner of Nawal's Mediterranean Grille, Swart said she loves owning her own restaurant and bringing delicious and unique food to the area.
"It has been a blessing from above," she said. "We have the best customers in the world."
Swart came to Big Rapids more than 30 years ago after meeting her husband in Egypt while he was with U.S. Air Force and she worked as a tour guide.
Once they started their life together in the small west Michigan town, Swart said she began working as a cook at the Falcon Head Golf Club, but eventually decided she wanted to venture out on her own.
"When you work for somebody, you are limited in what you can do, but now at my own business, I can do anything," she said. "I love showcasing my heritage in my food."
Swart explained she first began making cupcakes and desserts to sell from her home for a while before moving her business into a storefront in downtown Big Rapids, where she ran a bakery and sandwich shop.
"We got bigger and bigger, and people were asking for more," she said.
To keep up with the increasing interest from the area, Swart said Nawal's Mediterranean Grille moved to its new location in the Bulldog Square plaza on Northland Drive in 2017.
"I'm really happy, and we have been doing really well," she said. "My favorite part is being appreciated by my customers."
Swart said she has come to love living and working in Big Rapids, and is always thrilled for the opportunity to give back to the community.
"When God gives, you have to give back, and Big Rapids is my home," she said. "We have to give back to keep the community going."
Although Swart said many of her customers travel from cities like Grand Rapids, Rockford and Traverse City to enjoy her variety of traditional Mediterranean dishes, specialty cupcakes and more, she is always excited to see local faces stopping in.
"We are like a family here. I love my customers," she said.
In addition to the menu items she has offered in the past, Swart said she is always updating what is available, including adding options such as chicken wing baskets, appetizers, soup and more.
She said Nawal's Mediterranean Grille also has a bar for people who want to enjoy a drink with their meal and a family-style curbside meal in case people want to take their dinner home.
Overall, Swart said her goal is bringing people tasty, healthy and affordable food that they will love.
"We hope to see everyone here," she said.
