ANN ARBOR, MI -- Seafood and martinis have put Black Pearl on the map in Ann Arbor.

The restaurant on Main Street opened in 2008 when owners Harry and Jan Cohen decided to create “a comfortable and cool dining experience in the vibrant heart of downtown Ann Arbor,” according to the restaurant’s website. General Manager Jake Doyal became a co-owner alongside the Cohens in 2021.

Black Pearl has become a spot for seafood lovers to enjoy dinner with a martini in hand.

The restaurant serves a variety of seafood dishes, including its very popular fish tacos, which are made with tortilla encrusted tilapia, cumin, chipotle mayo, spicy cabbage slaw, pico de gallo, lime and corn tortillas.

The recipe came from one of the restaurant’s former chefs who traveled and tasted fish tacos from 50 to 100 different restaurants along the country’s southern border, Doyal said. The chef put together what he learned and created the recipe customers can still taste today.

“Week after week that is the top seller,” Doyal said. “The fish tacos are never going anywhere.”

Customers looking for something besides fish tacos still have plenty to choose from. Doyal said one of his menu favorites is the Atlantic Misoyaki Salmon, which features smashed fingerling potatoes, creamed leeks, sesame and Michigan maple misoyaki.

“(The dish features) a mixture of teriyaki and maple syrup,” he said. “You get like a little bit of sweet and spicy in a sense.”

Other popular dishes include the new Hamachi Crudo and its Branzino. The restaurant also serves non-seafood options like a rotating steak feature every week, filet mignon and a burger.

As for its martinis, Doyal said Black Pearl incorporates a lot of fresh fruit into its creations. He said one top-seller is The Last Strawberry, which features Deep Eddy Lemon vodka, strawberry purée and lemon.

Another fan favorite drink is the restaurant’s lychee martini made with Tito’s vodka, Soho Lychee Liquor, Elderflower, lemon and lychee juice.

“A lot of our drinks are very approachable,” Doyal said. “We’re not going for real hard liquor on top of liquor. We try to balance it out.”

As for the future of Black Pearl’s menu, Doyal said the restaurant is always running new features and adding what is popular to its menu. He said Black Pearl’s menu “does change quite a bit,” but it will always keep the staple dishes customers have come to know and love.

Black Pearl, 302 S. Main St., is open 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 to 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday and 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Find it online, on social media or by phone at 734-222-0400.
