CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Anyone who’s visited a brewery or winery is likely familiar with a “flight” of alcoholic beverages, traditionally presented in three to five smaller tastings lined up and displayed in a row for the partaker to explore. Although beer and wine flights are longtime bar, brewery and winery staples, cocktail flights have recently gained popularity as a national trend — and can be found on the menus of some of Cleveland’s top watering holes and restaurants.
Whether a tangy mimosa brunch flight or a round of spooky cleverly embellished cocktails, these tasting journeys allow locals to compare flavors and find new favorites.
Momocho
This iconic Ohio city staple is a small, dimly lit restaurant with funky Mexican décor, and an idyllic trendy patio. “The margarita flight (and guacamole and salsa trios) were the main focus of Momocho before opening in the spring of 2006,” says much-lauded chef and owner Eric Williams. “No other local restaurants were offering a tasting flight or sampler and our modern Mexican cuisine was the perfect opportunity to showcase multiple flavors, highlight ingredients and a cool way for guests to share.” Choose your own adventure from spicy mango, cucumber, pineapple, honey-ginger, red bell pepper, blood orange, seasonal chamoy, pomegranate or hibiscus. Momocho is also home to creative appetizers, small plates, taquitos, entrees, and one of Cleveland’s largest selections of mezcal and tequila (you can also get a flight of those, too). Trios are also available at sister restaurant El Carnicero in Lakewood. Momocho is at 1835 Fulton Road, Cleveland.
Wine Down Sweets Cafe
Wine Down Sweets Cafe is an unsuspecting spot for gorgeous seasonal cocktail flights — and all your other boozy and sweets needs. Try the October cocktail flight and curate your Instagram feed with spooky flavorful vibes. The perfectly garnished lineup includes the Black Magic Sangria, Candy Corn Cocktail, Campfire Ghost Martini and the Green Slushy. Stay for wine, coffee, lunch, cheese or baked goods, or book a spot at a pairing event or workshop. Guests can even grab a seasonal solo drink, like the cinnamon apple cider slushy, made with Fireball. For those heading to a party, order a custom cake, gift basket or charcuterie box, too. During the summer, sip a cocktail or glass of wine on the patio. Wine Down Sweets Cafe is at 12927 Pearl Road, Strongsville.
Market Garden Brewery
Options at this West 25th Street hotspot include the cidermosa flight, featuring Market Garden’s Magis Cider four ways: lemon, orange, prickly pear and grapefruit. Weekend guests can enjoy the brunch mimosa flight featuring sparkling champagne mimosas in lemon, orange, prickly pear and grapefruit. Regulars also rave about the food at this chef-driven American brewpub showcasing organic, local fare and an award-winning collection of beers near the West Side Market. Market Garden Brewery is 1947 West 25th St., Cleveland, next to the West Side Market.
Griffin Cider House & Gin Bar
Stop by for cider and gin flights at the Old-English-style pub in Lakewood. The establishment, which opened in 2015, is self-proclaimed as Cleveland’s first cider house and Ohio’s first dedicated gin bar. The current cider flight highlights tastings of Jack’s Pear, Original Sin Black Widow, Graft Farm Fluor and Wyndridge Cranberry. If those don’t tickle your fancy, choose your own selection of French, English, Spanish, Fruit, Farmhouse and common ciders from the draft and bottled line-up. Griffin Cider House & Gin Bar is at 12401 Madison Ave., Lakewood.
Square 22
Flight varieties at this Strongsville eatery cover bourbon, tequila, scotch and wine. “We thought it would be a great way for our guests to try different drinks that they normally may not have tried,” says general manager Diana Morrison. “Usually after they try them, they will order a glass of their favorite one.” Enjoy American land and sea favorites like yellowfin tuna or Ohio Farm long bone pork chop at the casual restaurant. Square 22 is at 13485 Pearl Road, Strongsville.
Char Whiskey Bar & Grille
Char Whiskey Bar & Grille is home to more than 30 whiskey flights. Try Julie’s flight, with pours of Amador bourbon, Nikka Coffey grain Japanese whiskey, Woodford Reserve chocolate rye and Jefferson’s rum cask bourbon. Overall, Char’s selection boasts about 300 different whiskeys including a selection of limited-release whiskeys. Stay for craft cocktails and American fare, including shrimp alfresco and char mac. Its sister restaurant, Avo Modern Mexican in Ohio City, fittingly offers up tequila flights of choice. Char Whiskey Bar & Grill is at 19337 Detroit Road, Rocky River.
