LAPEER, MI — Taco lover Jeff Stimpson said Lapeer desperately needed a good taco place. So he opened his own.
Taco’s Jamay, tucked inside Clark Gas Station, 252 S. Main St., serves two types of tacos: the American Taco for $2.50 and the Mexican Taco for $2.14. The American Taco features a flour tortilla filled with your choice of meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato and sour cream. The Mexican Taco comes with two corn tortillas filled with your choice of meat, onion and cilantro.
It was a spur-of-the-moment decision for Stimpson to open a business. The timing, just three weeks before the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020, was bad luck, he said.
“It was extremely difficult,” Stimpson said. “I’m still trying to recover from it. However, it’s been picking up quite a bit during the summertime.”
Stimpson said his food is freshly made and separates him from any other competition in the area.
“I pay someone to chop up the vegetables,” he said. “I get vegetables sometimes twice a week, and everything is fresh.”
Along with the Mexican Taco, the most popular item on the menu is a football-sized burrito for $7.55. Taco’s Jamay also offers nachos, quesadilla, and tamales.
The meats offered range from chicken, steak, marinated pork, seasoned ground beef, seasoned pork, and fish. Toppings include lettuce, onion, fried beans, red salsa, limes, jalapeno, tomato, cilantro, cheese, green salsa, and sour cream.
Stimpson worked in the automotive industry for 15 years after he left the military. He worked in Mexico, and his wife is Mexican, he noted.
“This is real food and not fast food,” he said.
