The Farmers Market had corn coming out of its ears Saturday during the annual Corn Day extravaganza.
Market vendors donated some of their corn and roughly 250 ears were served free of charge, complete with all the corn trimmings. Carolyn Bickford went straight for the butter.
For local residents yearning for fresh, homegrown corn, there is about a week left.
“Next weekend should do it for the corn,” said Farmers Market manager Ginger Wanamaker, who grows 4-5 acres of corn herself. “I know we’ll still have a little bit left but probably not after next weekend.”
It’s been a great growing season for corn, Wanamaker said, and the free samples were a hit.
“Look at all the people who are down here this morning,” said Robert Pitts as he prepared to eat his corn. “This is good for the community and great for our local growers to have a place like this.”
Kacie Davis is a big corn fan and stocks up in the summer so she can serve it year-round.
“I buy it every week and freeze it,” said Kacie. “That way we can still be enjoying corn at Thanksgiving. We’ll eat it about twice a week and I buy enough so it will last us the whole year.”
Her daughter Jaidyn was quick to bite into an ear of Silver Queen. Peaches N Cream and Ambrosia were other types of corn selling well on Saturday.
Farmers Market workers kept two large pots of corn boiling throughout the morning to ensure the corn was served while it’s hot. Members of Cub Scout Troop 88 took a break from selling lemonade to enjoy a corn sample.
