A symbol of one of Alabama’s most beloved products will be dropped some 60 feet from a crane mounted in a boom truck on New Year’s Eve in Evergreen. The city’s first-ever Conecuh Sausage Drop will take place Friday night at Liberty Hill Plaza on AL-83, just off I-65 at Exit 96.
The event was supposed to be held last year, but on the day before New Year’s Eve it had to be canceled due to the threat of bad weather and Covid, according to Evergreen Mayor Stanley Stallworth. “It was a real bummer,” he said.
Sausage won’t fall from the sky, though. John Sessions, the owner and president of Conecuh Sausage Co., had a metal box constructed for the New Year’s Eve event planned for last year. Since it wasn’t used then, the “2021″ was replaced by a new “2022.” The box, featuring Conecuh’s trademark grilling pig, has been strung with some 2,000 lights.

The drop was rehearsed without a hitch in a dry run Tuesday morning, the mayor said.
Evergreen’s New Year’s Eve celebration kicks off at 10 p.m. with a local DJ playing R&B and jazz tunes. A food truck will be on site, and the city will give away hot chocolate, cookies and party favors. At midnight, fireworks will mark the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022.
Stallworth is serving his first term as mayor of his native Evergreen. He moved home in 2018 from Chicago, where he had been a partner in the Sidley Austin law firm for more than 20 years.
“These are exciting times in Evergreen,” he said, adding that the city has “so many hidden gems” to offer in a prime location “right there on I-65.”
