GRAND RAPIDS, MI – What makes a delicious gyro?

For me, it’s the Tzatziki sauce – I love how the cool cucumber taste complements the zesty, seasoned meat. The messier it is, the better you know it’s going to be.

There’s nothing like a huge, warm gyro when you’re looking for a meal to fill you up. We’ve pulled together a list of 10 beloved local places to get a delicious, savory gyro in the Grand Rapids area. Keep scrolling to read our top picks in the city, including prices and a description of their gyros.

Here are 10 great local joints to check out in Grand Rapids the next time you’re craving a gyro:

1. The Pita House (Sami’s Gyro)

The Pita House has been a staple for delicious Mediterranean food in Grand Rapids for over 20 years. The restaurant was opened on Wealthy Street in 1999 by Basel and Sami Shatara and Marwan Kayyali. After gaining a following in the Eastown neighborhood, the owners opened a second location

The classic Sami’s Gyro is $14 and is made to order with a wide selection of toppings, sauces and seasoning.

The Pita House has two locations in Grand Rapids’ Eastown neighborhood, at 1508 Wealthy St., and in Kentwood at 3730 28th St. You can find a full menu and order online from both locations on the restaurant’s website, pitahousegr.com.

The Eastown restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and the Kentwood restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and until 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

2. Živio

Živio is a family-owned Bosnian restaurant that serves up modern European cuisine with exceptional flair, offering a cultural clash of authentic foods from Bosnia, Turkey, Greece, and many Central European countries.

The most popular dish on the menu is “The O.G.” – a $15 classic gyro topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce, all stuffed in Živio’s in-house lepinja, which is a pita flat bread. It’s $15.

3. Parsley Mediterranean Bar & Grill

Parsley Mediterranean Bar & Grill prides itself in serving quality, healthy cuisine at an affordable price. The restaurant carefully prepares homemade soups, dressings and delicious variety of dishes, all made from scratch, according to its website.

The restaurant has a variety of wraps on the menu including an $11 gyro or chicken shawarma, or a $10 vegetarian option with hummus Fattoush.

Parsley is located at 80 Ottawa Ave. in Grand Rapids. The restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. You can reach the restaurant by calling 616-776-2590 or place orders online here. The main website is parsleymg.com.

4. Zesty Gyros

Zesty Gyros on the East Beltline is perfect for a quick bite on the go. The family-owned restaurant serves Syrian specialties and other Mediterranean cuisine classics.

The restaurant serves a Gyro Platter for $18.99, which is a special combination of beef and lamb meat on a bed of rice, served with mini Greek salad, Hummus, and pita bread.

Zesty Gyros is located at 1971 E Beltline Ave. in Grand Rapids. The restaurant is open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed Sundays. It has both dine-in and carryout options, along with a catering menu, and you can place an order by calling the restaurant at 616-259-8724. 5. Eastern Deli

Eastern Deli opened its doors in 2000 and has been serving up a delicious array of gyros, burgers, subs and chicken tenders for two decades.

The restaurant is located at 2011 Eastern Ave. in Grand Rapids. It’s open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. You can call the restaurant to place an order at 616-452-0617.

6. Bosna Express

Owned by the same family that operates Živio, Bosna Express on 28th Street is another fantastic spot for a Bosnian-style gyro. The restaurant offers the same “O.G.” gyro as Živio, along with seven other unique gyros like the All-Day, topped with barbecue sauce, tzatziki, Founders All-Day sauteed onions and a fried egg.

Bosna Express is located at 128 28th St. SW in Grand Rapids. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (making it a great lunchtime destination) and closed on weekends. 7. Sahara Bistro Mediterranean Cuisine

Sahara Bistro opened last year and has been serving up delicious Middle Eastern food including gyros and shawarma as well as gourmet hamburgers made to order.

The Gyro, sold for $10, is made with gyro meat, feta, romaine, red onion, and tomato dressed in a creamy Turkish tzatziki sauce. There’s also a Chicken Gyro, for $11, that’s served with chicken gyro meat, lettuce, tomato, pickles, feta with Tzatziki sauce and rolled on a pita.

Sahara Bistro is located at 5260 Northland Dr. in Grand Rapids. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. 8. Tasty Gyro & Coney Island

“Bold Mediterranean” food, generations in the making, can be found tucked away in the Breton Meadows Shopping Center on Grand Rapids’ Southeast Side. Tasty Gyro & Coney Island is owned by Sami Shatara, who retired from The Pita House in 2012 but later decided to buy a struggling Coney Island business and opened Tasty Gyro & Coney Island in its place.

The Tasty Gyro, a blend of seasoned beef and lamb topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, feta and homemade cucumber sauce, sells for $14. The Tasty Mixed Gyro, with a mix of Labenese-style marinated chicken with the regular beef/lamb that includes homemade cucumber sauce, lettuce, tomatoes and onions goes for $17.

Tasty Gyro & Coney Island is located at 2269 44th St. SE in Grand Rapids. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Delivery hours are available Monday 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

9. Damascus Middle Eastern Grill

Damascus Middle Eastern Grill is located in the Spectrum Health Hospital Food Court and aims to bring the taste of the Middle East to the hospital, familiarizing patrons with Middle Eastern food, health, culture, kindness, and hospitality, according to its website.

The restaurant offers a gyro for $8.75, rolled with tzatziki sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion, Feta cheese and pita. There’s also a $1775 Gyro Combo on the menu, which is served with rice, grilled veggies and a house salad.

10. Chicago Style Gyro

Chicago Style Gyro offers a taste of the Windy City right here in the 616. The restaurant serves up gyros, burgers, Shish Kebab, salads and more.

The staple Chicago Gyro is sold for $8.99 and offers zesty seasoned lamb and beef meat with fresh vegetables and finished with sumac seasoning. You can add a large fountain drink and fries or rice for an extra $4.99.
