JACKSON, Wyo. — There’s a new band in the valley that’s serving up tasty jams to warm your ears.
Hot Pocket consists of a newly assembled unit of talented veteran musicians who come from a smattering of local bands. Originally the plan was for Lonesome Gold to play the Thursday afternoon aprés set at the Mangy Moose, but as several members moved from the valley, the band took a different form. Lonesome Gold bassist John Gallagher enlisted Marshall Davis to play bass, so Gallagher could shift over to rhythm guitar and focus on vocals. Then it was a no-brainer for the valley’s hottest and most wanted keyboardist Galen Karnatz to join the band and help drive their melodic grooves. Adam Smith of Sghetti, who’s really come into his own as a guitarist takes on the helm on lead guitar, and Liam O’Neil who played in Lonesome Gold and Pete Muldoon and the Pilgimrims along other bands, sits in on drums.
“We’re not really trying to reinvent the wheel here,” said Gallagher. “We strive to find a middle ground playing stuff people want to hear and dance to, and stuff we enjoy playing to put out a more authentic sound for both the crowd and audience.”
Hot Pocket covers bands like the Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers and The Meters, and has gained a natural ability to “hang out” in a groove, and seamlessly pass off solos between the cast of talented local musicians. While the band is still in its infancy, only having played together for about two months and, catalog consists of mostly covers, they plan to sit down and write some original material going forward.
“Not everyone likes jam bands, but I think most people can appreciate a band that can jam,” said Gallagher who provides the vocals and plays rhythm guitar.
Hot Pocket plays Thursday afternoons at the Mangy Moose from 4 to 7 p.m. and plays tonight at the Knotty Pine in Victor from 9 p.m. to midnight.
