Huell Howser fans will celebrate National Donut Day on June 4 with a double feature: first, a private tour of Glendora’s Rubel Castle followed by a visit to the Donut Man, another Glendora institution that recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

In the 1990s, Huell Howser played host, produced and wrote “California’s Gold” and “Visiting…with Huell Howser” on KCET for California PBS stations. The long-running shows remain popular with Angelenos who gain a deeper understanding of the history, culture and personalities of California, according to Hans Hermann, a docent at Rubel Castle.

The Glendora landmark, built by Michael Rubel in the late 1960s, was featured in an episode of “Visiting…with Huell Howser” and “Videolog” in 1990. The showcase, at 844 N. Live Oak Avenue in Glendora, boasts towers, turrets, a working portcullis and a grand clock tower. It is run by the Glendora Historical Society.

“I do the scheduling of tours for the castle and whenever the castle episode is on TV there is an increase in tour requests which indicates that his shows are timeless,” Hermann said. “(Howser) seems to bring out the best in the people he interviews so you feel like you know them as well.”

Fans of Howser will be led by Shawniece Swain, administrator of the Huell Howser Fan Club on Facebook. Swain loves to go on “Huell Stops,” which explains the visit to the Donut Man at 915 E. Route 66 in Glendora, which was also featured in Howser’s shows (www.facebook.com/TheDonutManCA).

Hermann, who has lived in Glendora for 47 years, met Michael Rubel in 1969 and was one of the band of castle builders. They reconnected in later years, and in 2014, when Hermann retired, he joined as a docent.

Huell Howser, Rubel Castle and the Donut Man are all unique and inspire fun in young and old alike, Hermann said.
